Jinja is located in Uganda's Eastern Region, around 81 kilometres (50 miles) east of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. Jinja city sits along the northern shores of Lake Victoria, near the source of the Nile, at a height of 1,204 metres (3,950 feet) above sea level.
