The World’s Most Massive Mountain Caldera, Mount Elgon with its, 4000km2 volcanic base, is a gigantic isolated volcanic peak on the border between eastern Uganda and western Kenya.
Its massive bulk, 80 kilometres in circumference, rises 3000 meters over the surrounding plains.
Its hilly regional scenery and cool heights give relief from the sweltering plains below, while its higher altitudes provide sanctuary for flora and species. Over 300 bird species live in the area, including the endangered Lammergeyer.
The mountainside is also home to small antelopes, forest monkeys, elephants, and buffaloes; the upper slopes are protected by national parks in Uganda and Kenya, forming a vast transboundary conservation area designated as a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve.
Mount Elgon National Park is located 235 kilometres from Kampala.
It is accessible through a paved road that connects Jinja to Mbale town at the western base of Mount Elgon.
Mountain climbing, mountain biking (trailheads from Sipi trading centre to Chema hill in Kapchorwa town), birding, hiking, nature walks, rock climbing, sport fishing, and cultural encounters with a chance to see where coffee comes from and how it is grown on the sides of Mount Elgon are among the major activities in the park.
